The Black Women’s Health ImperativeFounded in 1984, the Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI) is a national organization that is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Black women in America. Through investments in evidence-based strategies, BWHI works to promote bold new programs and advocates for health-promoting policies. Their mission is to ensure that black women have access to reproductive health options, are empowered to make real choices, and are assured of privacy in reproductive decision-making.
"Black women are three times as likely to have uterine fibroid tumors as white women. In fact, 80% of Black women will have uterine fibroid tumors. This raises our risk for pregnancy complications, maternal mortality and years of painful menstrual cycles. We joined CARE About Fibroids to create a sense of urgency around the need for improved diagnosis, expanded and better treatment options, and enhanced patient access to care for Black women and women of color." We must increase awareness, education, diagnosis and treatment for women who suffer from uterine fibroids. "At HealthyWomen, our focus is awareness and education when it comes to helping women take charge of their health. That is why we are so pleased to partner with CARE About Fibroids, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of uterine fibroids, especially given that some women do not even know they are living with this condition. We encourage others to join this partnership as we work together to help educate, engage and empower women with the goal of improving diagnosis and treatment for this condition." -Elizabeth Battaglino, RN, CEO of HealthyWomen |
To Know Is To KnowAfter 15 years of research and patient advocacy as Women's Health Foundation, To Know Is To Know was created in 2016 to continue providing pelvic health education and resources with a focus on adolescents and intergenerational relationships. TKTK aims to eliminate pelvic health disparities and enable all Girls+ to achieve their potential without the limitations of painful, embarrassing, and costly conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, bladder leakage, and chronic constipation. TKTK, along with their partner organization Below Your Belt, has reached over a million women and girls+ through educational outreach, social media, and community health trainings.
"TKTK recognizes that uterine fibroids are an all-too-common condition that cause women undue suffering, pain, and expense due to lack of early detection and awareness. We joined CARE About Fibroids to further our aim of connecting women to care faster and changing this harmful trend." -Missy Lavender, CEO and Board Member of TKTK |
